Hazel Smith

SMITH, Hazel (77)

January 24, 2020

Obituary

In loving memory of Hazel Margaret Smith (nee Bannerman), who passed away on January 24th, 2020 at the age of 77. Loving mother of Jamie (wife Michelle), Justin (friend Barb), and Jeremy, all of Sudbury. Former spouse to Phil Smith. Cherished grandma to Sarah and Tyler. Daughter of Harriet and Hugh Bannerman (predeceased). Sister to Muriel, Betty, Robbie, and James (all predeceased), and Tom of Aurora. Missed by many nieces and nephews, and many friends, including those from her parish at St. Peterís, CFUW, SYC, and her online knitting club, Ravelry. Hazel was a devoted elementary school teacher at various schools in Sudbury throughout her career; education was important to her, as her many students would attest. She loved reading, knitting, wine, the opera, ballet, symphony, and her friends. Hazel loved company and good conversation. All you had to do was show up, and she talked until you left -- and sometimes even after you left. A service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, February 15th, 2020 at St. Peterís United Church, 203 York Street, Sudbury, ON, with a gathering and refreshments to follow at 3:30 pm at the Idylwylde Golf and Country Club, located at 400 Walford Road, Sudbury, ON. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), or St. Peterís United Church in Sudbury. Arrangements entrusted to the Lougheed Funeral Home. I am so sad to read of Hazel's passing. She was such a lovely person to chat with on Ravelry and always found something positive to say about someone's projects. I loved her signoff for many years - "Cheers and red wine!" Then it changed to - "Cheers and white wine!" Such a beautiful soul will be deeply missed and we send our love and prayers to her family as they walk this path. May her memory be a blessing to all who knew her and may she rest in peace and light perpetual. Bluedragon (Helen)

So sorry to hear of Hazel's passing. Much too young! Such a bright light for many people. I remember her very fondly from my years at Laurentian, where Hazel did her degree in English and her MA in Humanities. She was one of our top students, and a joy to have in the class. She was always engaged, collegial, friendly, and respected her fellow students and challenged her profs. University departments need students like Hazel; they make us remember why universities exist.

I am sorry to hear about Hazel's passing. When I first retired, I got into knitting and Hazel was one of the first people I met at Sweet Yarns where we would get together and knit and share stories. She was a lovely person. She will be missed by all who knew her.
