Baker, M. Stella (Zabawa)

August 16, 2019 82

In loving memory of Stella Mary Baker (nee Zabawa) who passed away on Friday, August 16, 2019 at Maison McCulloch Hospice at the age of 82, of pancreatic cancer. She passed peacefully, surrounded by her devoted and loving children. Stella was the beloved wife of Jim (predeceased in 2018), the loving mother of Doug (Lori) of Hagensborg BC, Tom (Daphne), Deanna (Rob), grandson Trevor, and step-granddaughters Sophie and Callie, all of Toronto. Stella was also predeceased by her dear sister, Olga, of Los Angeles CA. Stella was born in Espanola on May 14, 1937. After graduating from Sudbury Business College, she met Jim at GMAC, where she was working as a book keeper, and they married on June 7, 1958. In the years ahead, she and Jim welcomed Doug (1960), Tom (1961) and Deanna (1963), while Jim pursued his new career with the Sudbury Board of Education. As the children grew, Stella was actively involved in the IODE and her church, serving the local community for more than 50 years. Stella was also a proud lifelong blood donor, the last donation in 2018 being just shy of her 100th. Over Jim and Stella’s happy 60 years together, they enjoyed cross country skiing and snow shoeing, as well as hiking and touring Canada from coast to coast. They also stayed in touch with, and visited, numerous relatives and in-laws in Alberta, British Columbia, California, Tennessee, England and Ukraine. Stella and Jim built a camp for the family on the French River where everyone enjoyed years of saunas, beautiful flowers, and bountiful vegetable gardens. One of Stella and Jim’s favourite pastimes at the camp was listening to, watching, and identifying the many visiting birds, with the loons having a special place in their hearts.
