Peacefully, Carl passed away at age 88 on November 27, 2016, at Health Sciences North. He was the beloved husband of Isla (Bock) Vanstone (predeceased 2011) for over 50 years, son of Earl and Vera Vanstone, and brother of Jack Vanstone, all predeceased. Carl was the loving father of Stephen (Nancy) of Hillsburgh, Judith of Markham, and Susan of Toronto, as well as the proud grandfather of Liam and Reid Vanstone and Sarah, Geoffrey, and Jenna Irvine. Born in Lindsay, Ontario, Carl moved with his family to Toronto during his high school years. Always a sportsman, he won city and provincial championships in football and baseball, and began his golf career in the early 1950s, becoming Assistant Professional at both the Toronto and York Downs Golf Clubs. He played in the Canadian Open, where he first encountered his hero, Arnold Palmer. Carl moved north to Sudbury in 1957 to work as Club Professional at the Idylwylde Golf and Country Club until his retirement in 1992, overseeing innumerable tournaments and events, including the annual Invitational, as well as everyday golf operations. Once referred to as the “Local Legend”, he was inducted into the Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame in 1991. A highly respected golfer and businessman, Carl was a community builder who helped develop both professional and recreational sports in northeastern Ontario. He was a teacher, mentor, and advisor, who believed in service and contributing to one’s community. Nothing delighted him more than seeing young people progress into successful adults. We will miss Dad’s strong encouragement, guidance and compassion, and his strong legacy will live on within us. Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of Carl’s life at the Idylwylde Golf and Country Club, 400 Walford Road, Sudbury on Sunday, December 4th, 2016, beginning at 12:30 p.m., with words of remembrance beginning at 2 p.m. Interment to take place at the family plot at Civic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Arthritis Society. (Arrangements entrusted to the Jackson & Barnard Funeral Home)
