In Loving Memory of Mychajlo (Michael) Buba. Mychajlo Buba died peacefully in his home on Wednesday, August 21st with family by his side. He was 94 years old. Mychajlo was born on July 23, 1925 in Starawa, Ukraine to Hanya (Mateyko) and Ivan Buba. He was the second of eight children, all predeceased. During World War II, as Germany’s occupation of Europe advanced into neighbouring countries and eventually into Ukraine, Mychajlo was sent to northern Germany and spent 5 years in forced labour. After the war ended and liberation was declared, Mychajlo made his way along with so many others to a displaced persons’ camp in Munster, Germany. It is in this camp, where he met and married Stefania Holowczak in 1946. In 1949 Mike emigrated to Canada with his wife Stefania and their son Michael, settling first in Coniston and then in Sudbury. This past May, Stefania and Mychajlo celebrated 73 years of marriage. Their love and devotion to one another and family was steadfast. Throughout the years, they worked side by side making a better life for themselves and their three children. Their business ventures included New Spot Grocery on Bancroft Drive, Northern Dominion Distributors and Crystal Ice. With hard work, they found Canada to be a country of opportunity. A natural athlete, Mike played soccer while in Ukraine and passed his love of sports to his children and grandchildren. Mychajlo’s life focus was his family and his church community. He was a life long member of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church and the Ukrainian Seniors Centre and in younger years, a strong bass in the church choir. Mychajlo is survived by his wife of 73 years, Stefania; their 3 children Michael (Halyna), William and Mary (Matti); 6 grandchildren, Stefanie, Matthew, Melania, Michael, Tatiana and Gregory and two great-grandchildren Sebastian and Dominic. He is predeceased by his siblings in Ukraine: Andriko, Hanya, Stephan, Genik, Maria, Ivan and Kataryna. Mychajlo leaves a legacy of love. He will be missed.
