Robert (Bob) E. Matson a most kind, trusted and loyal husband, father and friend passed away peacefully at Extendicare York on June 29, 2019 at the age of 85. Bob was a devoted husband to Jean (Labine) Matson; recently celebrating 63 years of marriage. As Jean says it; he was her rock. He will be forever missed by his children Kathyrn (Art), Dana (Catherine) and Melissa (Murray) and his grandchildren Angela, Amanda, Kristina, Kaitlyn, Michael and Braeden, six great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and special niece Rhonda Knell. Son of the late Frank and late Amy (nee Fielding) Matson and predeceased by siblings Lila Hicks, Frank Matson Jr. and Gladys Pace. Bob raised his family in Valley East where he lived for 60 years. He began work as a mechanic, spent several years managing at the Fisher Block Plant and then ventured forth with an entrepreneurial spirit into his own businesses. For several years he managed the landfill site in Garson and in his retirement years was delivery man for Caza Auto Parts. Bob never shied away from work in early years often working 14-hour days. Bob was the ‘go to’ guy for many and answered the call when anyone needed him always with unflappable calm. He was patient and kind, a shy man with a dry sense of humour; often having a witty comeback. A great teacher to his children. Bob was a man with simple tastes who enjoyed his after-dinner walks with daughter Melissa, caring for his garden and spent many summer evenings sitting with his wife Jean in the gazebo he proudly built. Bob loved to fish and enjoyed many a trip with son Dana and for many years had a standing tee time at Cedar Green with daughter Kathy. We’ll always remember the twinkle in his eyes catching that ‘big’ fish or making that long putt. If you wanted to fill your basket quickly with the best blueberries you only had to follow Bob; who had a nose for the biggest and bluest of berries which he brought home to Jean who made his favourite desserts. Bob and Jean enjoyed many great vacations to Vegas and Bahamas; travelling with long-time friends Ken and Colleen Muton. Ken and Bob remembered as an ‘Oscar and Felix’ duo shared many a funny story on their return. He was proud to have a winter home in Florida; where his neighbours Doris and ‘Corky’ Knell were the same neighbours he had at home in Canada. Jean and family extend a heartfelt thank you to the 4th floor staff at Extendicare York for the care they provided Bob from the moment he walked through their doors and the love shown to him as he became part of their family. As per Bob’s wishes there is no visitation or funeral service. Donations to the Parkinson Society would be appreciated. Arrangements have been entrusted to Ranger’s Cremation and Burial Services Ltd.
