Stortini, E. Donald

It is with tremendous sadness that the Stortini Family announce the passing of their father Donald Enzo Stortini, born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. A B.Sc. Graduate of the University of Western Ontario, London and a Graduate of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Toronto with a D.D.S. degree, Donald set his practice up in the city of Sudbury having been recruited by the late Dr. Mowat M.D of Inco. Don practiced dentistry for 41 years in Sudbury with his lengthiest office location on Larch Street; where the elevator would work from time to time, in the heart of the city. Don was the son of the late and great Fred Stortini who was born in Ancona, Italy and his mother Emma Gioventh who was born in Sault Ste. Marie. These two had the great fortune to celebrate their 49th wedding anniversary together in the Sault, Fred having been a fixture of downtown Sault Ste. Marie at his Queen Street shoe store. In 1959 Don became one of the founding members of the Club Montessori of Sudbury and served on many boards over the years. He also enjoyed being a charter member of the Opimian Wine Society of Canada from its first years of being founded in London, Ontario. Two of his key interests were Fishing and the Culinary arts. Over decades he amassed a significant library of recipes and prided himself in his culinary skills for groups both small and large. His love of fishing he inherited from his father who also was known to love the waters of Lake Huron and certainly caught way more fish than Don ever did. His greatest love was that of Manitoulin Island and the waters around it. His family and friends would often hear him describe it as God’s Gift to the World and being there for over 35 years of his life, having started with a simple summer cottage and turning it into a year round home for guests, helped produce his fondest memories of his children, relatives and friends who were forever present in his mind, heart and soul. As he stated … “It was the best place in the world”. Don is survived by his three children and families, Tim and spouse Ruth, Denise, and Mark and spouse Heather, as well as his grandchildren, Zachary, Samantha, Matthew, Camille, Imogene, and Sydney. Survived as well by his brother Robert Stortini, Robert’s wife Giselle and their children Michael, spouse Sharon of Trenton and David of Guelph. Having pre-deceased older brother Raymond of Sault Ste. Marie. Also, many cousins residing in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Novato, San Francisco and Huntington Beach, California. As per his request there will be no visitation however in lieu in flowers it is asked that a donation be provided to the Canadian Cancer Society. Interment will be at the City of Sudbury Civic Memorial Cemetery Niche Wall on Friday, March 15, 2019. Arrangements entrusted to the Lougheed Funeral Home.
