Immediately after opening bell on January 11, 2019 the Anheuser-Busch stock prices fell sharply on the sudden news of Derek Coffyn’s passing. Derek most likely would have told you that his passing was due to a result of being stubborn, refusing most orders and raising hell for nearly six decades. A big brother to almost everyone he knew, he embraced life and was always the first in line to listen, lend his truck, share his homemade sandwiches and drink your beer. Adam Gase, head coach of the New York Jets, is disheartened that his number one fan is gone. In fact Chicago Blackhawks centre, Jonathan Toews, has actually chosen to not play in the All Star Game in honor of Derek’s passing. His golfing gang is saddened that they will not be privy to further ‘Coffynisms’ during the annual Bubba and Tin Cup events. Son of Phillip (predeceased) and Alexandra Coffyn, brother to Sandra Coffyn (Graham Pitman) and uncle to Elizabeth and Kevin Coffyn. Loving friend to many including Rouleau, the Pierobons, Caz, Rick and Sheila, the Eddie’s Family and his numerous colleagues from the Ministry. He held a special place in his heart for Carol and her mother Helen. He assures us that unlike those times he avoided calls from work or friends that he truly is gone despite not ‘calling his last beer’. “When you find me in Heaven I will buy you a round”. In keeping with one of society’s rules, there will be a visitation at Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home, 233 Larch Street, Saturday, January 19th, 2019 from 1-3 pm. A short service will be held in the R.J. Barnard Chapel at 3 pm. In keeping with one of Derek’s rules, there will be a gathering immediately afterwards at Eddie’s Restaurant on Regent Street from 4-8 pm. No flowers please. But if you have a rush of generosity, then give to your favorite charity and tell them Coffyn sent you. Donations and messages of condolence available at www.lougheed.org.
