Passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, December 16th, 2018. He was married to the love of his life, Darlene “Stevie” Newell (Stephens) for 51 years. Loving father to Lara (Sean), Erin (Jamie), Jessica (Paul). Cherished Poppy to Haley (Stephen), Evan, Marley, Mia and Dylan. Dedicated son of Jack and Gladys Newell (both predeceased). Special son-in-law to Ed and Goldie Stephens (both predeceased). Devoted brother to Barry (predeceased), (Bev – predeceased), Dan (Shirley), Bruce (Linda), John (Estelle – predeceased), Jane (predeceased), (Art Leroux), Kathy (John Mahon), Walter (predeceased) (Carol), Michael (Carol), Peter and Joseph (both predeceased). Honourary Brother to Bob Gairns (predeceased) (Jeannie), and Wayne Beasley (Sharon). Dave was loved by so many nieces, nephews, and special people including Geoff Morris (Suzy). He was a friend and mentor to countless others. Dave was born and raised in Copper Cliff, a town that he always held near and dear to his heart. Dave had a successful on-ice career with the NHL that spanned 23 years, from 1967 to 1990. When he stepped off the ice, he took a position in the NHL’s Officiating Department, eventually moving up to the role of Assistant Director of Officiating. During the off-season, Dave shared many happy memories and his love of the outdoors with family and friends at Birch Lake, and on the French River. Dave was a selfless leader, known for his courage and generosity. He was a champion of the underdog, even when it wasn’t in his own best interest. Dave was a hard-working, loving, gentle and respected man who would lend a hand to anyone in need. He will be missed by so many. He will always be our hall of famer. Love Always, 6.
