Shaw, Cleary 'Joseph'

After a short illness, Joe passed away Thursday, July 26th, 2018 surrounded by his loved ones. Joe was born on December 31st 1937 in Markstay and his family relocated to Wahnapitae where he became a life-long resident. He celebrated 59 years of marriage with the love of his life Helene (nee Johnson). Loving father to Cathy Matarazzo (husband Dave) and Joey Shaw (wife Beth). Beloved “Poppa” of Ryan Shaw (wife Adrienne Boulet), Spenser McCall (husband Kyle) and Alysha Matarazzo (Riley Bobbie). Adoring great-grandfather to André, Quentin, Amelia and D’Arcy. Son of Ruth (nee Lawton) and Philip William Shaw (both predeceased). Brother to Margaret Eve Guilbeault (husband John, both predeceased), Nelson Buck Shaw (predeceased) (wife Alice) and special cousin Terry Kirwan (wife Muriel). Joe loved all of his many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Joe was always a community-minded individual. He was the co-founder of JOEL Builders Supply (1971-retiring in 1993, with life-long business partner Leo Goudreau), Captain of the Station #4 Wahnapitae Nickel Centre Fire Department for 30 years, served on many boards including recreation and roads, sports and rec for Nickel Centre and a key builder of the Wahnapitae Community Centre. Joe’s greatest joys were spending time with his family, cottaging at the West Arm of Lake Nipissing, and traveling. He and Helene traveled around the world and wintered for the last 15 years in Texas, where they made many close friends wherever they went. He enjoyed all sports, but particularly hockey and was recently elated when his Chicago Blackhawks won three Stanley Cups. He never missed a hockey game of his son, grandson and great-grandsons and has all the tournament hats to prove it. He enjoyed many mornings at horseback riding lessons with Spenser and cheering Alysha on at her swim meets. He was an avid hunter, yet a moose saviour having never shot any big game. He could not wait to spend his time in the bush with his best friend Morris and his brother Bucky. He loved to play country music on his guitar…using the same 3 chords for every song. Although a well-traveled man, what he loved most was returning to his home on the Wahnapitae River. The simple pleasure of relaxing on his deck with Helene by his side while he surveyed “his” river, “his” trees, “his” various critters, brought him great peace and happiness. Whether you visited in the hospital or hospice, provided a gift of food or gift card, or said a quiet prayer for Joe, the family is extremely grateful. A celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, August 15th, 2018 at the Colonial Inn in Coniston. Friends may gather beginning at 3pm until 7pm. The family would like to acknowledge the amazing and genuine staff at HSN, Maison McCulloch Hospice and Dr. Mark Dube.
