August 27, 1933 - March 13, 2018 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a husband, dad, pappa, Isopappa and dear friend. Leo passed away peacefully at the Maison McCulloch Hospice with his loving family at his side. Leaving behind his loving wife of 64 years, Anneli (Mannisto) and sons Matti (Marilyn) and Kari (Sandra) both from Manitoulin Island. Leo was an outstanding Pappa to James (Sarah), Kristin (Trevor) Young, David (Kelly) and Wayne (Courtney). He was also a devoted Isopappa to Sawyer, Charleigh, Mason, Jacoby, Harper, Isla, Alice and #8 due in September. Leo was born in Finland and is predeceased by his parents Arvo and Olga and brother Arvo Jr. Survived by his sisters Ritva and Maikki and many nieces and nephews in Finland. Wanting a better life, in 1959 Leo moved his family to Canada settling in Webbwood, Ontario. He first started working in the forest industry, then for general contractors and finally at INCO as a true hard rock bonus miner retiring after 30 years of service. Retirement years were filled with hunting, fishing, gardening, wood working, blueberry picking, building tynneri saunas and most importantly spending time with his family either in Den Lou, Whitefish, Fairbanks Lake, Manitoulin Island and finally at Finlandia Village. Shortly after retirement Leo and Anneli enjoyed many winters along with friends new and old in Lake Worth Florida. Leo was extremely proud of his Finnish heritage and was an active member of the Knights of Kaleva for over 30 years. He mastered the art of smoking fish, salting salmon and stewing Mojakka. He was a loyal friend who was always up for an adventure and never shy to lend a helping hand to friends or family. Always quick witted, exceptionally funny and not to mention his captivating stories. The family wishes to thank the entire staff and host of volunteers at the Maison McCulloch Hospice. Words cannot express our gratitude for the kindness and care given to Leo. During his stay he often referred to the fact that he was ""living like a king"". At Leos request there will be no service or visitation. A private family burial will take place at the Whitefish cemetery. There will be a celebration of life at Finlandia Village at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Maison McCulloch Hospice. (Arrangements entrusted to the Jackson & Barnard Funeral Home)
