It is with the deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Elvi (nee Salli) Vakiparta at Health Sciences North, Sudbury on March 5th, 2018 following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her daughter Leena Vakiparta and son Mikko Vakiparta, as well as a brother Oiva Salli and his family in Finland. She was born in Karjala, Finland and immigrated to Sudbury with her husband Kalevi (predeceased 2017) in 1957. They eventually settled in Mikkola subdivision in Walden where they raised their family. Elvi loved spending time with a few close friends and especially family at home and at camp on Tyson Lake. She enjoyed gardening, growing flowers at home and at the cottage. She loved spending time outdoors, fishing and observing nature as well as providing feeders for her favourite birds, hummingbirds, chickadees, and ducks. She eagerly looked forward to seeing the first robins in spring. Elvi liked baking and making delicious desserts as well as handcrafts such as knitting, crocheting, and needlepoint. Over the years she loved travelling and spending winters in Florida. Elvi was a loving mother and friend to her children and was always a source of support and their “soft place to fall.” She will be missed more than words can express. At Elvi’s request there will be no funeral service or visitation. Donations to Finlandia Koti or Maison McCulloch Hospice would be appreciated. Cremation at the Park Lawn Crematorium. Arrangements entrusted to the Lougheed Funeral Home.
