Baker, R. James 'Jim'

January 19, 2018 89

In loving memory of Jim Baker who passed away at Maison McCulloch Hospice on Friday, January 19, 2018 of prostate cancer at the age of 89, surrounded by his loving family. Jim is survived by his beloved wife Stella (nee Zabawa) of Sudbury and his children Doug (Lori) of Hagensborg BC, Tom (Daphne), Deanna (Rob), grandson Trevor and step-granddaughters Sophie and Callie, all of Toronto. He also leaves behind his sister Marjorie of St. Albert AB. Jim was born in Toronto and joined the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of 17. He trained at Moncton NB and worked as a radio operator in Frobisher Bay NU, Esquimalt BC, and other locations. He returned to Toronto to attend the University of Toronto, before moving to Sudbury where he met and married Stella 59 years ago. Jim subsequently attended Teachers College in Toronto, came back to Sudbury to teach, and was then a principal at several area schools for 25 years. Over the years, Jim enjoyed many canoe trips with his sons and colleagues. Jim and Stella enjoyed cross country skiing and snow shoeing, as well as hiking and touring Canada from coast to coast. Upon retiring 28 years ago, Jim and some of his friends built a camp for the family on the French River where everyone enjoyed years of saunas and the bountiful vegetable gardens he planted. Another favourite pastime for Jim and Stella on the French was listening to, watching and identifying the many visiting birds, including the loons. Jim and his family extend their thanks to all of the staff and volunteers at Maison McCulloch Hospice for their loving and dedicated care and for the support provided to the family. At Jim’s request there will be no visitation or service. Anyone wishing to make a donation may do so to the Maison McCulloch Hospice in Jim’s name. No flowers please.
