Lundgren, Helvi (Sutinen)

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Helvi (Sutinen) Lundgren, 94, after a short illness on Friday January 12, 2018 at Hoivakoti Finlandia Village. Helvi was born December 30, 1923 in Pihtipudas Finland. Husband of 66yrs. Tauno (predeceased). Sons Ronald (Wendy) and Gordon of Sudbury. Grandson Keith. Brothers Reino (predeceased) and Kaukko (Patricia) of Sudbury. Beloved Aunt of nieces and nephews in Sudbury, Whitefish and Spruce Grove AB. Helvi came to Canada with her Mother (Julia Sutinen predeceased) in 1926 to settle with her Father (Martti Sutinen predeceased) in Kenogami Quebec to make a better life in Canada. In 1941 they left the logging life to move to Sudbury. Helvi worked for the Government of Canada in Ottawa during the war years and returned to Sudbury to begin her career. Helvi met Tauno and was enamoured with the funny, tall and handsome Finn. They married August 17, 1947. Helvi worked for several companies until she settled in with the Province of Ontario Community and Social Services. Helvi was a tireless worker and the pure definition of Finnish “SISU”. The camp on Lake Penage was her home away from home where everyone was welcome. Helvi became famous for her “baloney coloured knife” and “thing in the oven”. No one ever left hungry or thirsty. Helvi and Tauno discovered Florida and the pleasures of an escape from Sudbury winters. Their winter home in Naples Florida was a gathering place for family and friends. She loved boating on the Gulf, Square Dancing and of course golf. Helvi volunteered for many organizations such as Finlandia Village, Ladies of Kaleva and South Side Seniors. Helvi lived a full life and filled everyone around her with love and respect. We will all miss her deeply. Many thanks to the caring and patient staff at Finlandia Village. Dr Bakker & Dr Cox for their care and compassion. A Celebration of Helvi’s life will be held at a later date with Interment in the family plot. Arrangements entrusted to the Lougheed Funeral Home.
