August 21, 1932 – January 9, 2018 In loving memory of Bob Dinan who passed away peacefully January 9, 2018 in his 85th year after a short illness. Surrounded by family during his final days, he maintained his unique sense of humour and kindness until his illness overtook him. He will be dearly missed. Beloved husband for 57 years of Maryon Dinan (predeceased) and fiancé of Shirley Neven. Loving father of David (Kim), Grant (Barb) and Rob (Karen) all of Sudbury. Special Dad to his canine companion Coco Chanel. Sadly missed by his grandchildren Joel Dinan (Sudbury), Paula Dinan (Aris Karcanias) (London, England), Joshua Dinan (Calgary), Justin Toppazzini (Sudbury), Jessica Toppazzini (Sudbury) and Jilian Toppazzini (Sudbury). Predeceased by his parents, George and Rhea (nee Quesnel) Dinan and siblings “Buddy”(Jack) Flanagan, Marie (Mel) Young, Sue (Ray) Ward, Joanne “Joe” (John) McDowell, Rhea (Ray) Halpenny and Pat (Helen) Dinan. Bob is survived by his brother Paul (June) Dinan and many nieces and nephews. Above all, Bob valued family most. Selflessly, he tended to Maryon during her long-term illness, with unwavering love and dedication. Bob was encouraging and proud of his sons’ accomplishments and pleased when they all returned to Sudbury to make their home. He was extremely happy when Shirley, along with her daughter Maureen (Rob) Mackey, entered his life. Bob was active his entire life, always a participant, coach or supporter of many sporting activities – golf, hockey, curling, baseball, hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Idylwylde Golf Club for over 40 years and attained 3rd degree and 4th degree Sir Knight designations with his 59 year association with the Knights of Columbus, Council 6074. He especially enjoyed “Dinanville” family camp on Lake Panache, his favourite place on earth, especially when filled to capacity with family and friends, waterskiing and boating, campfires and stories. A very proud Sudburian, Bob offered his time and service to many local charities and was especially proud of his involvement with the creation of the Sudbury Boys Home and University of Sudbury Fundraising. Bob was a career Insurance Broker and President of Dinan Insurance. With his brother Paul Dinan, he purchased Dinan Insurance Agency (established 1931) in the 1950’s from their father George W. Dinan. The firm successfully evolved into Dinan Insurance Brokers and was purchased many years later by family members and partners in the early 90’s, so Bob and Maryon could enjoy their retirement, including many winters in Bradenton, Florida together. Anyone who had any interaction with Bob soon learned he had a huge heart and was the ultimate supporter of the “underdog” in all of life’s situations; an extremely generous man with his time and resources. Most of all, Bob loved people and the art of conversation, communication and debating on anything from politics, sports or business to the topic of the day. At Bob’s request, all are welcome at a celebration of life to be held Saturday, January 13th at Tony V’s Restaurant, 1323 Martindale Road, Sudbury, 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., with words of remembrance at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Canadian Diabetes Association, Alzheimer’s Society of Sudbury, Knights of Columbus Council 6074 or charities of your choice in memory of Bob.
