At age 89, Erich Kiudorf passed away peacefully in Sudbury, Ontario on February 22, 2017, following a period of declining health. Pre-deceased in 2016 by his loving wife of 65 years, Linda Kiudorf. Survived by daughter Tiina Doyan (Richard) of Los Angeles; son Enn Kiudorf (Alison Taylor) of Vancouver; sister Iivi Mannik in Estonia, as well as six adoring grandchildren: Sarina, Armen, Erik, Kristen, Laura and Aleksander. Pre-deceased by his parents Karl and Charlotte, and two brothers Henno and Rein, all in Estonia. Born near Voru, Estonia on September 10, 1927, Erich lived a full and productive life. After a peaceful childhood growing up on the family farm, he left Estonia in 1944 while resisting the advancing Soviet invasion and landed in Germany near the end of WWII. He immigrated to Canada in 1949, married Linda in Toronto in 1951, and then settled in Sudbury. He worked at Inco for 40 years, initially in surface operations and later as a technical specialist within the Engineering Division. While in Sudbury he was able to resume his education which had been interrupted by the war, and over the years took many technology and engineering courses to develop skills in the fields of non-destructive testing and machinery vibrations analysis, which he applied at Inco. Erich was a wonderful, supportive and compassionate husband and father, always finding time to be involved. He was also very proud of his grandchildren and keenly interested in their activities, encouraging them to “study hard” and to pursue their passions. He was a firm believer in education, independence and self-reliance, and took pride in his ability to get things done. In his spare time, Erich built two houses and a camp at Rock Lake, crafted beautiful furniture, and was an active member of Sudbury’s Estonian community and a Scouts Canada Leader. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling with Linda and his family to places including the Caribbean, Mexico, Brazil, and back to Estonia. The family would like to recognize and thank neighbours Gary and Linda Kingerski of Sudbury, and Joyce Taylor of Copper Cliff, for their friendship, care, and support over recent years, as well as the staff at Seniors Only and other support services in Sudbury. While Erich’s independent and optimistic nature allowed him to view such assistance as mostly temporary until he “felt better”, the family is deeply appreciative for these wonderful supports. There will be no visitation, but a celebration of life will be planned for August in Sudbury. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (www.heartandstroke.com) or the Canadian Lung Association (www.lung.ca) would be appreciated. www.cooperativefuneralhome.ca
