In loving memory of Aulis Parviainen, 86, of Sudbury, Ontario, who passed away, Sunday, August 28th, 2016 at St. Joseph's Continuing Care Centre. Aulis is survived by his children, daughter Anne, sons Dale and Pekka (Raija), and brother Heimo (Kaija). He is predeceased by his wife Salme, parents Sylvi and Armas, sister Ritva and brother Jussi (Hanna). He will be missed by many family and friends across Canada, Finland and Sweden. An immigrant to this country, Aulis worked as a general mining contractor for 40+ years with a number of mining companies that took him across the country. While Aulis possessed a great sense of humour, he could be tough as nails to ensure workplace safety standards. As a result, he was recognized by the Governor General's Awards for his outstanding achievement for achieving a 25 year workplace safety record. As a highly skilled carpenter, he was also member of the Carpenter's Union. Aulis also served in the Finnish U.N. Peacekeeping Forces in Cyprus in the early 1960s. Additionally, he was honoured for his commitment to voluntarism by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship as a member of the Knights of Kaleva in 1988. In his retirement, Aulis was always there to help friends with various projects whether building a sauna or repairing a roof. As a nature lover, he enjoyed fishing and hunting with friends, swimming, bird watching, and accompanying the ladies for seasonal berry and mushroom picking in the region. He had a life-long love affair with homemade Finnish foods prepared by his wife, along with a sweet tooth for Finnish desserts. He claimed a strong cup of coffee could cure anything, and maybe a pint, but certainly a hot sauna. Aulis was a proud and long-time member of numerous local Finnish-Canadian organizations including The Sudbury Finnish Male Choir and the Knights of Kaleva. A memorial service will take place on Friday, September 2nd, 2016 at 11:00 am in the R. J. Barnard Chapel, Jackson & Barnard Funeral Home, 233 Larch Street, Sudbury, Ontario. A heartfelt thank you to St. Joseph's Continuing Care Centre for their care and support with a special thanks to Leanne who went the extra mile with Aulis. Donations to the The Finlandia SISU Charitable Foundation or St. Joseph's Foundation Sudbury would be appreciated.
