LEVERT, Ed - (1927-2009) Humanitarian, activist for workers' and seniors' rights, tireless defender of injured workers and the weakest, passionate about the North Shore and loyal friend to all who gained his respect. After a brief illness, Ed Levert, of Bathurst passed away at the Chaleur Regional Hospital on Sunday December 6th, loving husband of 60 years to Jacqueline (Boudreault) and cherished father of Suzanne (Roger) Young of Rothesay, Dan of Olds Alberta, Gary of Halifax and Tody (PJ) Veniot. Proud grandfather of Natalie, Brett, Frederick, Philip, Danielle, Sarah, and Zachary, Ed always took great interest in their various activities. Born in Sudbury (Ont) in 1927, Ed was heavily involved in the Labor movement and continued his lifelong passion to advocate on behalf of the workers when in 1966 he moved his family to Bathurst to organize the union at Nigadoo Mines for the “Mine, Mill and Smelter Union”. A few years later, the “Mine, Mill and Smelter Union” merged with the “Steelworkers' Union” at which time Ed became an organizer and staff rep for “Steelworkers' Union”, a position he held until his retirement. Ed also leaves behind a sister Terry Wise of Phoenix(AZ) and a brother, Ronald of Huntsville, Ontario as well as many nieces and nephews and friends throughout the country he loved. A Celebration of Ed's life will be held on Saturday, December 12th from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Paul Ouellette Room of the K.C. Irving Civic Center in Bathurst.
