McCluskey, Dr. Kenneth

October 14, 2009 86

McCLUSKEY, Dr. Kenneth A. - MBBS, FRCS (Edinburgh), FRCS (England), FRCS (Canada), FRCS (US) - In loving memory of Dr. Kenneth McCluskey, who passed away on October 12 in the comfort and dignity of his own home surrounded by his family. Arriving in Sudbury in 1960, Ken was Northern Ontario's first orthopaedic surgeon and served the community for over 40 years. He was Chief of Staff at St. Joseph's Hospital, President of the Sudbury District Medical Society and Founding Chief of the Orthopaedic Department at Laurentian Hospital. Although he retired from surgery in the 1990s, Ken was still administering to patients until earlier this year. For decades, Ken and his colleague and friend from Edinburgh, Dr. J.C. Wardill (predeceased), formed a medical partnership with an office on Larch Street in downtown Sudbury. Together, they treated thousands of patients over the years. Besides becoming one of Sudbury's most respected surgeons, Ken was an avid gardener, an armchair investor, an amateur linguist and a notorious duffer, who often terrorized unwitting golfers on the Idylewylde course, then regaled them afterward with stories at the 19th hole. Ken was known for his wit and his generous spirit. Born in 1923 in the village of Sorbie on the west coast of Scotland, Ken was schooled in Stranraer, Scotland, at Stonyhurst College, in Lancashire, England, and at the University of London, graduating with an MBBS in 1948. After an internship in general surgery and neurosurgery at St. Bartholomews Hospital, Ken served as a Lieutenant in the British army during World War II. He spent two years as a Regimental Medical Officer and a Casualty Officer in England and Europe. Ken came to Canada in 1958 on a fellowship at Toronto General Hospital. He was joined a year later by his wife Aileen and sons Alastair and Ian. While in Toronto, Ken worked at Women's College Hospital and Doctors Hospital, and also lectured at the University of Toronto. Ken's third son Stuart was born in Toronto. His daughter Fiona was born in Sudbury. Ken is predeceased by his wife Aileen in 2005. He is survived by four children - Fiona (Mike Shantz) of Sudbury, Stuart (Karen) of Toronto, Ian (Suely) of Miami, and Alastair (Mary-predeceased 2008) of Newmarket - and seven grandchildren - Taylor, Alec, Ryan, Samantha, Sydney, Sarah, Spencer. Kenneth Alan McCluskey will be sorely missed and fondly remembered. Memorial visitation at the LOUGHEED FUNERAL HOME, 252 Regent St. at Hazel St. (Friends may call 2 - 4, 7 - 9 p.m. Friday) with prayers at 3 p.m. Memorial Mass in Christ the King Church, 30 Beech St., Sudbury Saturday, October 17th, 2009 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Dr. Kenneth McCluskey Bursary at Northern Ontario School of Medicine would be appreciated.
