Penttila, Pentti

July 28, 2009 74

PENTTILA, Pentti Toivo Junior - In loving memory of Pentti Toivo Penttila Jr. 74 years With his wife at his side, Pentti passed away on Saturday, July 25th at the Sudbury Regional Hospital, Laurentian Site. Born November 21, 1934, Pentti was the much loved son of Anni and Toivo (predeceased). Beloved husband of Marlene (nee Laine). Loved and loving father of Peter, Lisa (husband Ken), and Sara (husband Andrew). Proud Pappa to Jake, Henry, Matthew, James, and Jack Oliver. He is fondly missed by mother-in-law Bertha Laine Kauppinen and brothers- and sisters- in-law Richard and Betsy Laine, and Jim and Monica Wilkison, and many nieces and nephews. Pentti was a lifelong Sudbury resident and lover of the North—“God's Country.“ He was proud of his Finnish and Canadian roots—and felt whenever Canada's hockey team played Finland it was a win-win situation. He was a natural athlete, a football player and long jumper in his youth; a cross country and downhill skier who taught friends to “ski suave“; and a keen tennis player with a great drop shot. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, spending time at the camp and on the family sailboat at Manitoulin Island. As an enthusiastic raconteur, he was known to tweak the truth just enough to make a funny story. Even his mother-in-law agreed he was a smooth dancer. In retirement he read widely and answered thousands of questions from his grandsons who believed Pappa was Canada's expert on plants, animals, and all things having to do with nature. Funeral Service in the R.J. Barnard Chapel, JACKSON AND BARNARD FUNERAL HOME, 233 Larch St. on Wednesday, July 29th, 2009 at 11AM. Cremation in the Parklawn Crematorium. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation, the Canadian Diabetes Association or the charity of your choice. (Friends may call 5-9PM Tuesday or after 10AM Wednesday.)
